Learn how to play 5 AWESOME Extreme guitar Riffs!
Nuno Bettencourt is one of my all time guitar heroes and over the years the MasterThatRiff! series has looked at how to play quite a few of his awesome riffs with the band Extreme. Check out the following guitar lessons and have fun!
Kid Ego
A classic from Extreme’s debut album released in 1989, this riff encapsulates Extreme’s groovy rock sound that was a breath of fresh air amongst the latter days of the Hard Rock genre.

He-Man Woman Hater
Yup, THAT riff 🙂 This foxed me for the longest time. If, like me, you owned a copy of the ‘Official’ Pornograffitti TAB book you’ll know it wasn’t exactly the most helpful book, packed with a quite a few typesetting errors! Thankfully with so much live footage available now on DVDs/Bluray and YouTube it’s easier to accurately transcribe how players are playing things.

Lil’ Jack Horny
Another fave from the 1990 album Pornograffitti. I’ve always adored the dropped D heaviness of this riff as well as the typical Nuno groove. The intro harmonics are truly beautiful.

Suzi (Wants Her All Day What?)
Rounding off the trio of riffs from Pornograffitti here is a lesson showing you how to play Suzi (Wants Her All Day What?) which blends a very melodic riff with that total groovy vibe.

Comfortably Dumb
Extreme’s 5th album Saudades de Rock was released in 2008 after a very long break for the band. At the time I was stoked that the band were together and releasing music again. This riff, Comfortably Dumb (not ‘Numb’ as I say in the video ;)), is an album highlight for me.
